How To Perform CPR Or Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

If you find yourself in a situation where someone is experiencing cardiac arrest, you must act quickly. There are several steps that you can take to help save the person's life. One of the best ways to perform CPR is by using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

First, make sure that the AED is properly charged and ready to go. Next, locate the victim and initiate chest compressions. Be sure to use plenty of pressure and keep up the pace for at least two minutes. If the victim has a shockable rhythm, provide CPR while simultaneously administering an AED shock. You can opt for CPR AED and first aid certification at given online sources.

When to Contribute First Aid and CPR

When someone falls to the ground, doesn’t respond, or has a sudden onset of chest pain, the first step is to call 9-1-1. If you are able, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) right away.

If you are not able to do CPR or if the person is not breathing, start chest compressions. Follow the American Heart Association guidelines for adult CPR:

To start chest compressions:

1. Position the person on his or her back with their head and shoulders supported by a flat surface such as a groundsheet or pillow.

2. Put your hands on the person’s middle and push down firmly and evenly into the chest with steady pressure.

3. Count aloud “one two three four” while pushing until you reach “eight” and then pause for two seconds before continuing.

4. Repeat this cycle of compressions for two minutes, until help arrives.

To deliver oxygen: 1. Position the person on their back with his or her head and shoulders supported by a flat surface such as a groundsheet or pillow.

2. Give two quick breaths (2 centimeters) and, if the person doesn’t respond, give one long breath (10 centimeters).

3. Repeat until help arrives. If the person is not breathing, start chest compressions immediately after giving oxygen and follow the above instructions for starting chest compressions.

When you find yourself in a situation where someone is injured, the first step is to assess the situation and make a decision about what needs to be done. As responders and bystanders, it is important that we know when and how to contribute first aid and CPR.

There are a few basic guidelines that should be followed when providing first aid. First, always protect the victim's safety before anything else. Second, stay calm and assess the situation. Third, use common sense when deciding whether or not to perform CPR or administer first aid. Finally, ask for help if you need it.
